It is necessary to carry out the so-called direct-designing method for semi-submersible offshore structures, which will be increasingly built among the various types of offshore structures. To design semi-submersible offshore structures with more rational strength and with high reliability, the authors have developed a total program system composed of response analysis of motions in regular waves by the Hooft' method, structural response analysis of framed structures by the matrix method and statistical analysis in irregular waves by the linear superposition method. In this paper, outline of this system is presented with examples of calculation. Comparison with the experimental results of the experimental model of the lower hull type has proved this system to be reasonable. Furthermore, response amplitudes (motions, displacement, internal forces and stresses) of the large-sized calculation model of the lower hull type in regular waves are calculated using this program system. The expected values of these response amplitudes in the North Atlantic and in the North Sea are obtained. And these expected values in irregular waves are shown to vary depending on the sea condition. (Wassmann)
