Most idealistically, the Shuttle was to provide experimentalists with a combination of the long observation times available from satellite and manned missions with the flexibility and quick time scales of rocket programs. These were to be accomplished without unduly burdensome quality assurance programs and with minimum involvement of NASA into the details of the investigator's experiment. An onboard scientist was to be an extra advantage. We are now far enough along in Spacelab 1 that we can provide some preliminary judgements as to how this ideal is turning out. In brief, the program has not succeeded in achieving all of the above but is, so far at least, surprisingly successful. A discussion of how the Spacelab l program is shaping up will be followed by some suggestions for the future. (Buehn)
