Spacelab is being developed and constructed in Europe under direction of the European Space Agency (ESA) as a highly versatile general-purpose orbiting laboratory to be used for manned and automated space activities in the fields of science and applications. Since the first Spacelab mission is now scheduled for December 1980, now is the time to begin planning experiments and payloads that can fully utilize the Spacelab capabilities. The purpose of this paper is to introduce Spacelab to likely future users and to describe the main characteristics of the Spacelab system to show individual experiments or payload planners how their equipment can be accommodated by Spacelab.
