An analysis of naval ships for escort mission applications has included gas turbines of regenerative cycle variations to assess their potential benefits in terms of fuel economy. Significant reduction of mission fuel requirements can be realized by the use of regenerative gas turbines in place of simple cycle engines. With the addition of variable geometry and compression cooling features, the use of regenerative cycle engines offers potential fuel savings of over 40 percent as compared to simple cycle gas turbines for escorts of 2000 tons and composite mission ranges of 5000 nm. Further exploitation of the improved regenerative cycle efficiency in combination with smaller ship sizes can result in even greater reduction of fuel requirements. (Wassmann)
