This paper assesses potential naval applications for high speed ships. Although entitled 'SES Applications', the paper deals broadly with high performance ships as a family, using SES characteristics data only for purposes of illustration. The evolving Soviet naval threat is reviewed, along with other trends in the defense environment, to identify operational deficiencies that are predictable in the future. The application of high speed ships is then illustrated in the context of these potential deficiencies and their utility value is examined primarily in qualitative terms. The paper concludes that there is ample operational justification to continue the development of high performance ships and that they should be introduced into the operational navy on an orderly and selective basis where their unique capabilities can be used to advantage.
