Although noise reduction measures for cabins and engine control rooms (C/R) have been studied extensively, noise attenuating measures for machinery have not been payed much attention. In this paper, the influence ratio of noise from machinery to the noise level of a room was studied on diesel ships. This ratio is the most important factor to be considered in applying measures to machinery. As the result of the study, it became clear that the noise level in cabins is greatly influenced by structure-borne noise from a main engine, however, that in a C/R by one from machinery as well as a main engine and diesel generator engines. Therefore, effectual noise reduction in cabins can be obtained by applying measures to a main engine. But, for a C/R, it is necessary to apply corresponding measures to each machine in proportion to the influence ratio to the noise level in the C/R. As for noise attenuating measures for diesel ships, it is the most important subject for a future study how to control more effectively structure-borne noise from a main engine. (Wassmann)
