Subsurface safety valves (SSSVs) are installed in many offshore oil and gas producing wells to provide for shut in of the well in case of pressure loss at the wellhead. The selection and sizing of these valves require prediction of the flow rates at which the SSSV will close. A study was performed to improve the design criteria used in the selection and sizing process. The study was performed for the Otis-J and Camco A-3,2 3/8-in. and 2 7/8-in. nominal and the Otis-F, 2 3/8-in. nominal SSSVs. Example calculations are given. (Wassmann)
