The object of the work reported is the control of the motorcycles exhaust emissions, in an attempt to meet the standards of the current U.S.A. air-pollution regulations. In this work large motorcycles equipped with four-stroke engines are examined. The reduction of exhaust emissions has been performed through modifications of the carburation system combined with the optimization of the ignition and the valve timing. At first, a set of tests adjusting the current carburetor was carried out, and the results indicated that the carburetor progression system should be improved for obtaining lower exhaust emissions. To this end the motorcycles were fitted with fixed venturi type carburetors (such as those equipping cars, for example) characterized by a sophisticated progression system. The tests carried out showed a considerable reduction of the exhaust emissions, obtained through a better control of the engine intake mixture ratio both at constant speeds and unter acceleration conditions.
