A simple test chamber was constructed to examine the effect of nozzle configuration on the performance of the jet under water. Nozzles with different conical contraction angles (alpha = 13 deg-180 deg) and straight cylindrical sections (L = 0.5 D - 4 D, where D is the nozzle diameter) were used. Tests were carried out under water, and the mass-loss from an Aluminium 99.5 specimen was the measure for comparing the performance of each nozzle. The form of the submerged water jet was indirectly examined, through its destructive effects on the surface of the aluminium specimens. The study revealed that nozzles with conical contraction angle of 60 deg seem to be most suitable for cutting with submerged water jet, and a nozzle with a 0.5 D straight cylindrical section seems to be the best in the group. A comparative examination was made between the cutting performance of this nozzle under water and in air. (Buehn)
