Gas turbine engines of recently developed fighter aircraft systems have exhibited durability problems that have resulted in reduced system operational readiness and high operation and support costs. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of one study conducted to attempt to identify the causes of the unacceptable durability of these engines. This study evaluated the differences between engine design usage (design mission mix) and actual flight usage and examined how these differences affect the relative durability/life of engine turbine components. Using existing analytical methods developed and validated for the CF6-50 commercial engine and the J79 military engine, the study evaluated the effects of engine application and mission content on the relative cyclic and steady-state durability of these components. The engine applications studied were the YC-14 transport, the B-1 bomber and the F-14 and F-16 fighters. Included in the mission content studies were mission mixes, individual missions, and mission legs, i.e. take-off, cruise, and landing. Flight data, design missions, and factory accelerated mission test (AMT) conditions were analyzed. (Wassmann)
