A drive mechanism has been developed for a variable displcement Stirling engine for automotive propulsion. It features a variable angle wobble plate mechanism and utilizes rolling element bearings. This paper describes the mechanism, its motion, dynamic characteristics, and the wobble plate angle control. The mechanism converts reciprocating motion into rotary motion in such a way that constant angular speed rotation of the main shaft will result in purely sinusoidal linear motion of the reciprocating pistons. It is amenable to perfect dynamic balancing for any number of pistons. The variation of the plate angle is accomplished by mounting it on the schaft at an acute angle and then rotating it around and relative to the shaft. The drive mechanism is an integral part of a complete power train designed as a single system for a front wheel drive 3,500 lb. passenger automobile, Fuel economy of 42 mpg for the system have been projected.
