An attempt is made to theoretically assess the variation of the shear- to-normal stress ratio, t/sigma, along the soil-wheel interface without referring to shear stress-displacement relations believed to be irrelevant. Based on recent investigations of the soil rupture pattern beneath rigid wheels on cohesionsless material, the total soil-wheel interface is subdivided into three zones of different soil behavior. Simple assumptions are made of the soil-to-wheel movements within these zones to evaluate t/sigma. Experimental checks showed the approach developed herein to be in better agreement with the test data than were previously developed theories.
