Surface treatments, applied to automotive cams and followers, can affect their pitting and scuffing resistance, depending on the metallurgies and lubricants employed. Surface treatments can often provide significant improvement at less cost than changing the basic metallurgy of the cam or follower. The interaction between surface treatments and lubricants cannot easily be explained; a greater improvement in scuffing resistance can often be achieved by surface treatments application, without anti-scuffing additive in the oil, than when such additives are present. Low temperature surface treatments can be applied more widely to different metallurgies than high temperature surface treatments.
