The intersection of three-dimensional shock wave surfaces is studied by employing a model problem in which a circular concal shock and a planar wedge shock intersect. The two shock surfaces intersect along a hyperbolic line. The interaction process is initially a regular reflection pattern and downstream evolves into a Mach reflection pattern. Locally, each point of confluence of three of four waves can be reduced to an equivalent two-dimensional shock interaction. The two-dimensional pressure/deflection shock-polar diagrams are employed to explain the details of the regular reflection and the reasons for the transition to Mach reflection. There is a transition zone between these two regions which is conical in nature where two shock triple points split off from and move ahead of the geometrical intersection line of the two incoming waves.
