The control system requirements for large space structures are examined from a systems Viewpoint, considering the interaction of related disciplines such as structural dynamics, avionics, testing, enviroment modeling, and mission planning. System tradeoffs which involve the control system are discussed, emphasizing the benefits of early consideration of control and systems strategy in the design of a large space structure. Control system requirements evolving from the trade studies are identified for the various mission phases, and are compared with existing control technology as a means of indicating technology development needs. A status is given of current Marshall Space Flight Center technology activities in large space structure control. (Se.)
