The exceedingly high noise level in aircraft cabins can be attributed to the transmission of low frequency propeller noise through the sidewalls of the fuselage. It could be ascertained that this noise transmission can be reduced on a laboratory scale by stiffening of the panels. This method of noise reduction, which involves but little extra weight, seems to be promising. The objective of the research was to investigate the concept of adding stiffness in order to reduce cabin noises in a light twin-engine aircraft. The attenuation power of the stiffening was measured and the results achieved are most encouraging and provide incentive for further studies. (de Posamentier)
