Spacelab is already in an advanced state of development although its first flight onboard Space Shuttle are scheduled for 1980. This paper discusses Spacelab Active Thermal Control Subsystem (ATCS) developed by AERITALIA. This subsystem ensures the environmental control of the pressurized module and keeps the temperatures of the equipments and experiments in the module and on the pallet within prescribed limits. The ATCS consists of two cooling loops, water inside the module and freon outside, with an interconnecting heat exchanger. The design features of the major components (pump packages, heat exchangers, cold plates, thermal capacitors) are also included. A summary is presented of the thermal analysis for component development and integration into coolant loops. The mathematical models and representative results of the fluid loops and their major components are shown. The large effort devoted to testing during development from small items to full-scale models is discussed and the most imporant results are presented. (Kursetz)
