This paper presents the special techniques developed for testing the Space Shuttle command system. The Electronic Systems Test Laboratory (ESTL) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) has been equipped with a unique capability for simulating the ground-to-Space Shuttle command link by sending the commands from the ground station computer (Univac M642B computer) to the Network Signal Processor (NSP) of the Orbiter communication system via authentic processing, transmission, and reception equipment. Special test equipment and software have been prepared for evaluating the command channel by extracting the command data from the NSP for return to the ground station computer for subsequent processing to determine overall performance of the channel. In this manner the complete command link can be evaluated and verified on the ground well in advance of actual flights. (DePo)
