Recent interpretations of the 1977 Amendments to the U.S. Clean Air Act may restrict the introduction of alternatives to the gasoline engine such as the diesel, gas turbine, or stratified charge powerplants. In addition to stringent requirements for hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx), the environmental hurdles have been expanded to include a wide range of unregulated emissions. Exhaust particulate, organic solubles, sulfate, aldehydes, and carcinogens are just a few classes of compounds of concern. Data is presented on particulate and related emissions from the diesel car to illustrate what other alternative powerplants can expect to face in the assessment of potential health and welfare risk.
