Structural adhesive materials and the bonding process and procedures for the joining of load bearing metal-to-metal joints were developed primarily due to the military requirements generated during the second world war. Progress in this high technology area has now brought us to the point where the capability exists to design and assemble complex, long-lived, primary load carrying air-frame components, using structural ahdesive bonding materials and processes. Programs such as the USAF-PABST program at the Douglas Aircraft Division are designed to develop the required performance data and cost information to allow decisions concerning the use of primary adhesive bonds in airframe structures to be made on a rational engineering basis. This presentation will cover the highlights of the evolutionary development of structural, metal-to-metal adhesives and the associated bonding processes from the 'early days' to the present time.
