Consideration of the rapidly growing demand for automatic as opposed to manual bus transmissions. The hydrodynamic principle, its characteristics, advantages and limitations are stated. Various transmissions are evaluated in view of the theoreteical desire for simple, inexpensive design on the one hand and optimum power exploitation, good shift quality and high operating reliability on the other. The significance of fuel consumption and repair costs are stressed and the important contribution of the wear-free retarder to cost saving and safety is assessed and its effectiveness, response time and design complexity examined. In conclusion an attempt is made to evaluate future demands and whether they can be met by modifying existing designs or by new transmissions. (Wassmann)
