This paper describes the basic Acurad process and controls developed to produce the hypereutectic aluminum engine block used for the Chevrolet Vega. The basic principle of Acurad casting as described in an earlier paper given at the 1970 Congress has not changed. However, the establishment of rigid process controls from the alloying of the 390 alloy through the rough machining of the engine block at the casting plant were absolutely mandatory in mass producing the first sucessful (no liner) engine block. Major control items used in actual casting of the engine block such as metal control and die casting machine controls, are described, also metallurgical controls. Finally the most important control, training of personnel from supervision to the die casting operator, is reviewed. (Kursetz)
