Investigation were carried on the suitability of methanol-gasoline blends for use in automobiles. Effect of methanol blending on and some important characteristics of a typical gasoline were studied. Studies were conducted on an Indian passenger car on the effect of methanol blending on engine power fuel economy, driveability, vapour lock tendencies and carbon monoxide emissions. On energy basis, significant improvements in fuel economy were observed. A reduction in maximum power under WOT conditions was observed and carbon monoxide emissions reduced substantially under road load conditions. It is concluded that if phase separation problem in the blends could be overcome or alternatively if methanol and gasoline is induced simultaneously in the engine in required proportions the methanol-gasoline blends can be effectively used as fuels for S.I. engines.
