The paper describes some of the requirements to be satisfied in the design of wheeled load-carrying capsules for operation in pneumatic pipelines. Fleet size is related theoretically to capsule payload and to time of passage through pipeline and terminals. Fleet cost is related to capsule payload on the basis of hypothetical relationships between capsule cost and body length. After a brief description of capsule operation through pipeline, boosters and terminals, more detailed consideration is given to capsule payload volume in relation to pipeline diameter and curvature. Experimental data are analysed to provide load/speed/tyre temperature diagrams applicable to solid rubber tyres. Stated assumptions as to payload density and other factors lead to a corresponding set of load/length/diameter diagrams for capsules. The use of these data to aid the selection of load-carrying wheels is demonstrated, and after an analysis of transient lateral forces on the guide wheels the paper suggests a scheme for capsule design and comments on what are thought to be the governing requirements.
