Economic models were needed for the creation of cost-effective process plans, especially with the computer-aided and computerized process planningsystem. Based on the rigorous generalized economic models for material removal processes introduced earlier, macro- and micro-economic models were developed for process planning. The macro-economic model is applicable to the cost estimation and pre-planning stage when detailed information about the part and process under development are not available, and when a cost-effective process sequence must be selected. The micro-economic model is used for the selection and optimization of operating conditions at each work station in the manufacturing process. These models were developed for analyzing process and operating condition alternatives encountered in the machining of an airframe structure from a titanium forging. (DePo)
