A statistical-experimental investigation was performed to determine the effects of the swaging process variables on product quality and residual stress. This investigation was part of a program performed with the objective to develop a process to produce ultraprecise barrels from prehardened Cr-Mo-V barrel steel with finished-swaged rifling. The results showed that tooling design and precise selection of process parameters can e used to control or elimiante residual stress and achieve precision in cold-swaged barrels. Dimensional precision of plus 0.0013 Tor-0.0013 mm and straightness of 0.04 mm/m wre demonstrated with the developed process.
