In the past ten years, many investigations have centered on hot die or isothermal forging of titanium alloys. This paper describes isothermal forging of three large components at IIT Research Institute. This includes a nose wheel for F-III aircraft, a centrifugal impeller, and a bulkhead for F-15 aircraft. The 0.277 m(sup2) plan area bulkhead is the largest and the most complex isothermal forging made thus far. The paper also refers to work at other companies. Finally, criteria for selection of components suitable for isothermal forging are discussed with reference to commercial exploitation of the technology. (DePo)
