The purpose of this paper is to establish a rationale for the feasibility of composite material flywheels for use in urban vehicles. Comparisons in terms of safety, weight, and costs will be made between steel flywheels and composite material flywheels. This paper will also review pertinent results of the MERADCOM flywheel development program. An operating energy density of 21 w-hr/lb has been achieved in this test program. The results of this program have led to the selection of a composite material flywheel in the Energy Reserach and Development Administration (ERDA) electric powered passenger vehicle. Pertinent aspects of the energy storage unit design will be discussed. (DePo)
