Aero engines for marine propulsion offer very low size and weight advantages which, however, are obviated by the size of the ducting necessary to transport the inlet air and exhaust gases. Early failures were due to imposing unrealistic space constraints, and current installations are based upon considerable research and model testing to avoid a recurrence. More recently, and due to revised thinking on silencing, it is shown that duct size and top weight can be substantially reduced, thus providing immediately available installation advantages.
