When conducting fatigue tests in which the loading is broadly representative of aircraft service it is customary to save time by omitting from the load sequence those periods during which loading is sensibly steady as when standing on the ground or cruising in smooth air. However when representing service conditions for a supersonic aircraft it is important to retain that phase of the flight cycle during which the structure is kinetically heated as the occurrence of time-dependent effects such as overageing and creep may influence the fatigue performance. The need to include periodic heating and cooling of the specimen is time consuming and it is necessary to develop methods of test acceleration to achieve an acceptable rate of testing. (Biller)
