Intermittent failures in automotive electronics are of concern with regard to meeting reliability expectations. They are difficult and costly to identify and eliminate. Causes of failure have been traced primarily to electronic components such as IC's, transistors, capacitors, and relays. The Electronic Control Unit for electronic fuel injection is used as an example of successful progress being made to control intermittent failures. The Quality Control and Reliability Program, including intermittent screening test methods for electronic components, subsystems, and final assemblies, is described. The need for a more demanding, dynamic relationship with semiconductor suppliers is also reviewed. (Kursetz)
