Recently, the rigidity of a hull and an engine has not increased so much as the exciting forces of a propeller and an engine, with the increase in the speed of a ship and the poer of an engine. Then, it is feared that the vibrations of a propeller shafting and an engine frame may increase, and the hull vibration may increase under their influences. In this investigation, problems of the exciting forces of an engine and the whirling of a propeller shafting, which have hardly been investigated so far, were picked up to make such developments as follows: In relation to the exciting forces which were loaded on the bottom of a ship by a diesel engine, we proposed a new concept, which was different from conventional ideas because the rigidity of an engine and its foundation was taken into consideration, to evaluate accurately the exciting forces of an engine. In relation to the whirling of a propeller shafting, we established a method of analysis for the natural frequencies, which is more accurate than any other conventional method of calculation. Furthermore we completed the vibration response calculation. These developments enabled us to predict accurately the exciting forces of an engine and the whirling of a propeller shafting at the stage of design, and increased reliability in vibration problems.(Wassmann)
