This report details a literature survey carried out to identify potential methods for periodic cleaning and removal of NaK, sodium-potassium alloy, from shipboard homopolar machines that use this liquid metal for current collection. The survey aided the definition of an experimental program for evaluating proposed cleaning methods to be carried out with the machine in place, either sealed or partially opened. As a result of this study a promary method and alternate methods have been identified, based on the specific constraints established by shipboard applications. An experimental program designed to further define the exact operations, which must be implemented in order to achieve a high degree of reliability in cleaning NaK from homopolar machines, is described.
