This paper is concerned with the performance optimization of a hydraulic hybrid vehicular drive. The drive uses a small IC-engine prime mover, a hydraulic transmission, and a hydraulic accumulator as a small energy storage. The system aims to achieve a high overall efficiency by utilizing the hydraulic accumulator to maintain optimal loading of the prime mover and to provide regenerative braking. The system design was conceived and designed with the aid of both the analog and digital modelling techniques. Based on the preliminary design of the hybrid vehicle drive, this paper presents the selection of optimal controller gains and time constants using multiparameter optimization. An optimization algorithm called the complex method is used, which is a modification of the sequential simplex method. The objective of the optimization was to minimize the fuel consumption without any loss of drive performance. A comparison between the drive performance before and after optimization is presented and discussed. (Wassmann)
