It is possible to measure the concentration profiles of radical as well as stable species in flames using molecular beam sampling techniques. Perturbation to the flame by sampling probes that permit detection of highly reactive species can be made acceptably small. If the studies are carried out at low pressure and/or burning velocity so that additional spatial resolution is achieved, this data can be of sufficiently high precision and accuracy to permit meaningful quantitative rate calculations. If the elementary reactions in the flame have been identified, specific rate coefficients can be extracted. If the mechanisms are not known, the overall rate data may be used as a basis upon which to make judgment regarding proposed mechanisms. (Wied)
