In turbulent diffusion flames, fluctuations and scale of velocity are responsible for the mixing of fuel and air and for the process of reaction. For the prediction of spatial distribution of reaction, it would be desirable to know the turbulence properties of the fuel concentration. Until now, there has been no suitable way to measure these directly. Attempts were made to derive the behavior of concentrations from the turbulence properties of velocity, using the anlogies between exchange of momentum and mass. Different measuring devices have been developed; the main items are microphone probe and laser-Doppler anemometry. A new version of light-scattering methods is envisaged for direct measurement of fluctuating concentrations. (Wied)
