Measurements of composition, temperature, velocity, and turbulence using hardware probes are discussed. Probe interference effects can be made negligible in streaming flows, but much more attention is needed to minimize this effect in recirculating and strongly swirling flows. The strong fluctuations in density present in turbulent combustion can lead to sampling errors. Velocities and species concentrations actually will be measured as the Favre averaged values. Measurements of NO and NO2 are at best qualitative, and a concerted effort is required to determine the phenomenology affecting these measurements. (Wied)
