The principal types of probes used to measure temperature, species concentrations and velocity in laboratory and industrial flames are discussed, and significant sources of errors in those measurements are outlined. Sources of error inherent in all probe measurements include perturbation of the flow field by the probe and response of the probe to turbulent fluctuations. In addition, there are sources of error which are specific to a particular type of probe. Selection of a particular probe design for making measurements in flames depends primarily on the flame structure. Various designs and techniques for reducing probe measurement errors are outlined.
