A very promising way to alleviate the Nation's energy problems, one that would greatly affect United States maritime activities, would be the rapid development of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant-ships to produce energy-intensive products at sea. Such OTEC plant-ships would use the temperature difference between the warm surface layer and the cold deep layers of a tropical ocean to drive a heat engine to produce electric power that, in turn, would be used to produce ammonia, aluminum, liquid hydrogen, and/or other products. The construction, deployment, operation, and shipping support of these plant-ships are discussed. (Hannebauer)
