A detailed study using time dependent measurement techniques was made of the periodically unstable flow, called 'pulsation', on a family of blunt axisymmetric bodies with indented surfaces in high speed flow. Resulting from the experiments, a conclusion has been drawn that this explosive unsteadiness is caused by the formation of an annular supersonic jet of fluid directed towards the axis of the body downstream of the intersection point of two shock envelopes evident during a brief part of the cycle. The paper describes the techniques and calculations used to demonstrate this conclusion and an attempt to predict the frequency of the instability. Examples of this flow unsteadiness were demonstrated in M = 2,2, 6,0 and 16,0 flows.
