This paper describes in detail a U.S. Air Force-funded program currently underway to quantitatively measure the reliability of nondestructive inspection (NDI) conducted on actual aircraft structure at Air Force field and depot installations. The problems involved in quantitative measurement of the reliability of NDI, as performed in the maintenance inspection of aircraft, are discussed. A detailed approach is presented for the collection of flaw detection data, including sample selection and preparation, inspection procedures development and standardization, and the logistics involved in obtaining a statistically representative cross section of Air Force field and depot installations. The types and quantity of data being collected are reviewed along with approaches for analysis of the variables involved in the program. (Peters)
