The aircraft industry is being challenged to reduce the costs associated with the development and production of modern aircraft. The small lot sizes and the large variety of part geometries and production methods for sheet metal parts distinguishes aircraft manufacturing from the other batch manufacturers. Group technology offers significant possibilities for improving the productivity of aircraft manufacturers by exploiting the physical and procedural sameness of manufactured parts. The sameness of these parts can be recognized by applying a numerical classification code to each part. This classification code should describe the part's design and best fabrication methods. Families of similar parts can thus share design and production resources. The problems associated with the development and application of such a code in aircraft manufacturing are discussed.
