The modern metrologist is increasingly being called upon to measure large structures with high accuracy. Commonly encountered are: airplane fuselage measurements, nuclear reactor component measurements, structural element measurements for prefabricated structures, and measurement of large irregularly shaped containers used in custody transfer. In this paper we will describe how the techniques of coordinate transformation and multiple redundancy, developed for small scale 3-D metrology, were used for the measurement of large liquid Matural Gas (LMG) tanks aboard ships.
