High Performance Ships exhibit such a wide range of hull forms and speed-drag characteristics that a number of fundamentally different propulsion systems have been required in these vehicles. This paper reviews a cross-section of such vehicles now being operated by the US Navy from the standpoint of the number and type of engine, transmission and thruster arrangements selected for each. The sequence of vehicles considered is: Hydrofoils, Air Cushion Craft, Displacement/Planing Boats. It is concluded that the need for complex power transmissions is the most salient feature of this class of vehicles.
