The requirements for rapid advancement in the development of marine propulsion battieres are numerious. These include a variety of manned and unmanned vehicle systems that operate on or below the surface to depths of 6000 meters. This paper provides a historical overview, a summary of state-of-the-art developments, and present research and development requirements for marine batteries. Future trends and potential applications including vehicles with drag reduction are discussed.
