By means of the low velocity friction apparatus, we study the friction characteristics of some tractor transmission oils with two different kinds of currently used materials. For the new oils, we examine the behaviour of friction coefficients and curves at: - different sliding speeds, - three oil temperatures, with one material and only with some additives. We observe a degradation of the friction characteristics at high temperature. In order to explain and amplify this phenomen, independently, we performed some oxidation and friction tests. The comparison of the new and used oil analysis and the study of the material surface allow a better understanding of the performance of the oils. One of the conclusions is that some chemical compounds, friction modifiers and EP additives, undergo some modifications which, in some cases, may lead to undesirable friction properties. Another conclusion is that the LVFA, when properly used, may be considered as a convenient tool to develop high performance tractor transmission oils.
