An onboard Spacelab flight vacuum facility is required to support many different experiment needs. Because of the low ambient pressure of the space environment, evacuation can be performed by connecting the vacuum chamber directly to outer space. The ultimate pressure achievable depends on the tube dimensions and the outgassing of the tube wall. For lower pressures, an additional pump would be needed. This paper provides an estimation of the ultimate pressure that can be reached without using a pump. In addition, selection criteria for the vacuum pump are presented.
