This paper describes the electrical and mechanical functions of an automatic pipe welding system which utilizes the Hot-Wire TIG welding process as the joining medium. While the basic machine prototype was originally designed for off-shore use the same concept has applications for land lines as well. Four welding heads are positioned in equal sectors around the pipe and perform the weld simultaneously in a multi-pass sequence. The control of the many welding parameters associated with the four heads required the application of a microprocessor based controller which is further described. The Hot-Wire TIG Process under this advanced control technique is capable of producing high quality welds at deposition rates competitive with other weld processes. The results of the weld tests are also described in this paper.
