The problem of appraising the formation of scale within a plant from the plant performance rather than from a direct inspection is considered. The techniques which may be used in such an appraisal are illustrated by data obtained from several plants, mostly using the additive Belgard EV, but data with other additives is presented for comparison. The related problem of predicting the performance of an additive in a plant from results obtained in simple laboratory experiments is also considered.
