The variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) inverter controlled AC induction motor drive system has been adopted as a railway vehicle propulsion system in many countries. A VVVF propulsion system requires less maintenance work and less energy consumption than any other propulsion system, such as cam control or chopper control. Although the VVVF propulsion system for railway vehicle application was realized at the beginning of the 1970s, it has not expanded rapidly due to the unfavorable weight and size of equipment. The application of newly developed technologies, such as the microprocessor, Fluon cooling method, high rating GTO thyristor, has made it possible to design the system equipment size and weight smaller than in other applications, with higher reliability. This paper describes the features of VVVF propulsion systems that were recently delivered by Toshiba referring to the above mentioned new technologies.
